Surviving a zombie apocalypse beats being a wage slave any day!

After spending years toiling away for a soul-crushing company, Akira’s life has lost its luster。 But when a zombie apocalypse ravages his town, it gives him the push he needs to live for himself。 Now Akira’s on a mission to complete all 100 items on his bucket list before he。。。well, kicks the bucket。

The end of the world is a gift in Aso (the Hyde & Closer series) and Takata’s entertaining manga spin on the zombie genre。 Twenty-four-year-old Akira Tendo’s employed at a company that uses exploitive tactics to work its employees to the bone。 He frequently pulls all-nighters and deals with passive-aggressive threats from his superiors, and lusts after his winsome coworker, Saori Ohtori, who also happens to be the “boss’s side piece。” Akira is so set in the routine of his daily drudge that when a zombie apocalypse erupts, his first thought is that it’s going to make him late for the office。 When reality comes crashing in, he determines to make a bucket list of 100 things to do before he inevitably becomes a zombie。 First stop is confessing his love to Saori。 Some reflective moments intersperse the fun and action, as Akira muses: “I sacrificed time I could have spent with friends and for what? What good did all that overtime do me?” Takata’s art pops with a wonderful frenetic energy that propels Akira’s quest。 Akira’s glee at escaping his job—even if it means the world is ending—serves up giddy wish-fulfillment。 (Feb。)

Gonzo madness! The main character feels liberated by the zombie apocalypse because it's freed him from his exploitative, underpaid salaryman job。 There's some over the top capitalist commentary, some gonzo action scenes, a nice love interest / antagonist setup, and a good message about thinking about what's really important in life before it is too late。 Loved this and can't wait for the next volume!**Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review Gonzo madness! This is a typical Shonen manga。 It has a male protagonist, gore, and a lot of fan service。 It is definitely geared toward young males。 I, on the other hand, am an old lady。 Haha。 I've been reading manga for a good 20 years, so I am used to the template the industry uses。 I still enjoyed it for what it was。 I love a good zombie, but they were incidental to the story which revolves around a young disillusioned office worker who is offered a new lease on life when the zombie apocalypse occurs。 I di This is a typical Shonen manga。 It has a male protagonist, gore, and a lot of fan service。 It is definitely geared toward young males。 I, on the other hand, am an old lady。 Haha。 I've been reading manga for a good 20 years, so I am used to the template the industry uses。 I still enjoyed it for what it was。 I love a good zombie, but they were incidental to the story which revolves around a young disillusioned office worker who is offered a new lease on life when the zombie apocalypse occurs。 I did like that the mangaka used a real life issue, death by overwork that is prevalent in Japan, to jumpstart his story。 It went by very quick。 A little too quick。 I felt like the characters needed to be fleshed out more。 But if the manga is successful that can happen as the story progresses。 It was done well enough that I will keep an eye out for more volumes。Thank you to Netgalley and Viz for the ARC in return for an honest review。 。。。more

This book felt a little underdeveloped。 I realize that this is Vol。。 1 with more story to come, but it was not clear on a straight reading IMHO that this list of things that he wanted to do was the actual goal of the main character。 He was a bit girl obsessed (that's a common Japanese manga trope, correct?) and "living it up" among the undead。 It's certainly a different take on the life of the living surrounded by the walking dead。 But it almost is too silly because Akira here far too dismissive This book felt a little underdeveloped。 I realize that this is Vol。。 1 with more story to come, but it was not clear on a straight reading IMHO that this list of things that he wanted to do was the actual goal of the main character。 He was a bit girl obsessed (that's a common Japanese manga trope, correct?) and "living it up" among the undead。 It's certainly a different take on the life of the living surrounded by the walking dead。 But it almost is too silly because Akira here far too dismissive of the threat to him from these zombies--so focused on his bucket list。 A nice moment between him and his "buddy" does develop at the end of this volume, but again it's not entirely clear that Akira's endgame is really the bucket list。Again, as an Educator, I would hesitate to be able to recommend this book to my peers and teachers at my school。 However, if you want a fun read that does not take the zombie trope too seriously, this is not a bad title to pick up。 Hopefully, the subsequent volumes are readily available to tie up some of the loose ends for the reader。 。。。more

I  so very much loved the premise of this manga。 It is rare to see a story told of a zombie apocalypse with such hilarity and optimism- a man working for a dark corporation, Akira Tendo, sees the zombie apocalypse as his opportunity to complete his bucket list。 He encounters a beautiful woman in a grocery store while attempting a "beer run" and saves his best friend in this first volume。 The story was definitely entertaining and unique and it absolutely made me want to continue reading。 In fact, I  so very much loved the premise of this manga。 It is rare to see a story told of a zombie apocalypse with such hilarity and optimism- a man working for a dark corporation, Akira Tendo, sees the zombie apocalypse as his opportunity to complete his bucket list。 He encounters a beautiful woman in a grocery store while attempting a "beer run" and saves his best friend in this first volume。 The story was definitely entertaining and unique and it absolutely made me want to continue reading。 In fact, I'm looking forward to purchasing this when it is released in paperback and the volumes that proceed it。 I'm so very glad I requested and read this without taking into account all of the skewed reviews as it truly is an entertaining and unique manga! But what he soon discovers is that it is a black corporation and his life has just been signed off to benefit the corporation。 Three years of constant work and bullying from his manager has left him burned out and a zombie - until one day he finds himself suddenly in the middle of a zombie outbreak in downtown Tokyo。 It should be a frightening experience but instead Akira is happier than he's ever been - he's finally free! In celebration, he makes a bucket list of things to do now that he's free of his salaryman enslavement - then he sets out to accomplish them。A black corporation is a slang term for an exploitative sweatshop-type employment system where the employees work impossible amounts of hours while managers browbeat the employees into submission so that they lose all motivation even to quit。 Here, the running joke is that it was such a bad experience for Akira to work for one for three years that the zombies are a blessing now that they have freed him。 He's too happy to be terrified and looks at each day as a joy as he cheerfully avoids the pesky zombies。This is the type of book aimed at adults and older teens, so expect the usual over abundance of fan service, naked breasts, misogyny, oversexualized love interests, and a complete lack of respect for the female race。 Because if nothing else, zombies never seem to really need clothes, especially the female ones。 It's egregious but it is the nature of the beast for this genre of manga。The series looks like it will be cute but it also feels like a one-note song of going after bucket list items and achieving them in ways not expected by the protagonist。 There are many horror elements, of course, and this is a dark comedy that is really aimed for a different audience than me。 As such, I will not be following Zom 100。 Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher。 。。。more

Now he can do all the things he always wanted in his (previously nonexistent) spare time - and he’s gonna write them down so he gets to do them all in a Bucket List of the Dead。 Haro Aso and Kotaro Takata’s Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, Volume 1 is such a fun book。 It’s a refreshingly upbeat take on the stale zombie genre with a vibe akin to Zombieland rather than the more sombre Living Dead movies。 I love that Akira just accepts that the zombie apocalypse has just happened and gets on with life。 Aso doesn’t write any backstory explaining it either。 It’s like when Tom Holland became Spider-Man and Marvel ignored retelling his origin for the umpteenth time - it doesn’t really matter because we already know。 Instead, the zombies are just an inconvenience to be avoided while Akira sets out to have fun for a change。 Like finally telling the girl he’s been crushing on at work that he loves her, has a joyride on a cool motorbike, stocks up on beer, and reunites with an old friend he’s lost touch with。 The metaphor of office workers as zombies isn’t an original one though it does highlight a genuine problem in Japan and black corporations are unfortunately real。 There’s even a word for death by overwork: karoshi。 It’s an older boy’s manga so there’s a few too many gratuitous bewb and butt pics。 Shizuka, the mysterious girl Akira meets on his beer run, looks like a fun addition to the cast though she seems to be the archetypical competent hot girl to Akira’s grinning bumbling doofus。 The first part of the title is a bit crap - just call it Bucket List of the Dead rather than add Zom 100 (a pun on “Top 100”?) - and Akira comes off too cartoony at times in the way he takes the new world order in his stride。 I get that zombies are ubiquitous in our culture now but still, you’d think he’d be a little bit unnerved at its sudden intrusion in his reality! These are just very minor critiques though - overall, I really enjoyed this one。 The story was well-developed and characters - all of them likeable - were added at just the right moment to keep things interesting。 I was entertained the whole time and wanted more as soon as I finished this first volume - a great sign! Like the best genre stories, this one isn’t really about the monsters - they’re just the background and/or plot catalyst。 This is about young people turning their back on traditional society (the subtle criticism being it should be torn down because it’s rotten) and instead doing what they really want like pursuing happiness in life, and it’s a really uplifting read as a result。 This is a great start to a very promising new series - Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, Volume 1 is the best manga I’ve read in a while。 。。。more

Of course it is, but it adds to the charm。 The fact our main character is able to survive this long is suspect, but this isn’t that type of story。 It has a deep message about Japanese society and work culture。 Japan has extreme attitudes to work, encouraged to work long hours with no overtime pay, and these effects are felt throughout society。 There’s a reason Japan has a high suicide rate。 There’s a reason they have the term Karoshi — death from overwork。 Japan are trying to put a stop to this, but this behaviour is so ingrained it’s going to take a long time to change, and you can see the pressures placed on our hero and his fellow colleagues to work more than they should, even if it makes them miserable。This manga is like a response to this culture, how things can only change with a huge societal change。 Like, let’s say, a zombie apocalypse。Despite the optimism he feels at his new freedom, you don’t forget that it is the end of the world。 You can feel his regret at his lost time, the regret he feels at missing out on spending time with friends and family, and the deaths of people he knew and liked。 It’s bittersweet how he only reclaimed his life when the world is ending and it all seems hopeless, but the optimism is almost infectious that when something does go right for him, I can’t help but want him to succeed。I really enjoyed this manga, and I would definitely keep reading the series。 It has a hopefully optimism that you can’t help but enjoy, and I look forward to watching the rest of the story unfold。 。。。more

Akira Tendo watches zombie movies to escape his life。 He works at a job he hates and doesn't have the courage to tell the girl he likes his feelings。 His spirit is broken and he dreams of change。 He gets his wish when the zombie apocalypse happens。I am not usually a fan of zombie stories。 It is my least favorite type of monster story, but this one was everything that I love in a horror。 Akira Tendo has given up。 He really just wants something exciting to happen。 I love that in the beginning he i Akira Tendo watches zombie movies to escape his life。 He works at a job he hates and doesn't have the courage to tell the girl he likes his feelings。 His spirit is broken and he dreams of change。 He gets his wish when the zombie apocalypse happens。I am not usually a fan of zombie stories。 It is my least favorite type of monster story, but this one was everything that I love in a horror。 Akira Tendo has given up。 He really just wants something exciting to happen。 I love that in the beginning he is sitting at home and even looks like a zombie。 Just existing in his day to day。 It is very witty。 Because the end can come at any time, he creates a list of things he wants to accomplish before a zombie kills him。 It is a lot of fun and the story is basically broken up by each item on his list。 I am super excited for my copy to be able to pick up and will continue the series。 。。。more

This was an entertaining book, the art and writing were clear and detailed。 It's a different take on a zombie outbreak than most, being the kind of humor and fanservice typical of manga aimed an older teenaged boys。 It wasn't to my taste, ultimately, but there's an audience for it。 More Zombieland than Walking Dead。 This was an entertaining book, the art and writing were clear and detailed。 It's a different take on a zombie outbreak than most, being the kind of humor and fanservice typical of manga aimed an older teenaged boys。 It wasn't to my taste, ultimately, but there's an audience for it。 More Zombieland than Walking Dead。 。。。more

**I received an ARC from the publisher on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。I love zombies and I love how did was written。 The bucket list ascept makes it a different take on a zombie story。 The illustrations were awesome, especially the zombies。 I loved the main characters。 Can't wait for the next one。 **I received an ARC from the publisher on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。I love zombies and I love how did was written。 The bucket list ascept makes it a different take on a zombie story。 The illustrations were awesome, especially the zombies。 I loved the main characters。 Can't wait for the next one。 。。。more

A very unique take on a zombie apocalypse。 When you pick up a book about zombies (or decide to watch a movie/tv show), you expect it to be about surviving, finding the resources and tools to live, and maybe "killing" the zombies。 This manga throws all of this out and decides that the protagonist is just going to enjoy the freedom of an apocalypse with no more day-to-day life responsibilities, and make a list of things to do before dying (aka the bucket list)。I loved the concept, but started of q A very unique take on a zombie apocalypse。 When you pick up a book about zombies (or decide to watch a movie/tv show), you expect it to be about surviving, finding the resources and tools to live, and maybe "killing" the zombies。 This manga throws all of this out and decides that the protagonist is just going to enjoy the freedom of an apocalypse with no more day-to-day life responsibilities, and make a list of things to do before dying (aka the bucket list)。I loved the concept, but started of quite skeptical about the author pulling it off。 Did he make the hero believable? No, but I love him! Did he explain how the hero somehow survives against all odds? No, but I love it。 It's just fun to read something with zombies that doesn't focus on how to survive and "kill" zombies。 It's quite graphic, but has a great sense of comedy。I really enjoyed this first Volume and will read the next ones to see what happens with that bucket list。 。。。more

I want to like this story。 The premise is great, the main character is likeable, the potential for great story arcs is there, a lot of positive things going for this story。I just don't know about the characters。 I know this is book 1, and more will come, but I'm hopeful the characters will be as likable as the rest of the story。 I'm hopeful, and looking forward to reading more of this series。**I got this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 I want to like this story。 The premise is great, the main character is likeable, the potential for great story arcs is there, a lot of positive things going for this story。I just don't know about the characters。 I know this is book 1, and more will come, but I'm hopeful the characters will be as likable as the rest of the story。 I'm hopeful, and looking forward to reading more of this series。**I got this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Akira is going about his "life" working nonstop at the office。 One day he wakes up to the zombie apocalypse。 He gets up the nerve to tell his crush how he feels about her, only to find out that she has been turned into a zombie too。 Akira decides to make a bucket list since he now never has to go back to work, but will probably be a zombie soon。 He also manages to save his best friend from the zombies。 Be warned: there are topless zombies in this book。 #Zom100BucketListoftheDeadVol1 #NetGalley Akira is going about his "life" working nonstop at the office。 One day he wakes up to the zombie apocalypse。 He gets up the nerve to tell his crush how he feels about her, only to find out that she has been turned into a zombie too。 Akira decides to make a bucket list since he now never has to go back to work, but will probably be a zombie soon。 He also manages to save his best friend from the zombies。 Be warned: there are topless zombies in this book。 #Zom100BucketListoftheDeadVol1 #NetGalley 。。。more
